The Glen Highland Farm

No need to leave your best friend behind this summer. Maryland Dog has found a destination that is about as dog-friendly as they get. Your dog can run freely off-leash through private trails, meadows, fields, forests and swim in a pond or creek without all the rules and limitations of public campgrounds and parks.

The Glen Highland Farm

The Getaway at Glen Highland Farm was created especially for people who like to vacation with their dogs. The land was once home to the Iroquois Indians who lived near the beautiful Butternut Creek. The Creek winds through 175 acres of rolling meadows, winding trails, and a 2-acre spring-fed pond. All perfect surroundings for you to enjoy a great vacation at the same time your dog enjoys an outdoor adventure.

The Getaway is a vacation experience for dogs and dog lovers to enjoy the outdoors together in the countryside. Fees cover your lodging, enjoyment of the property that includes full use of the dining pavilion, pantry, bathroom & shower facilities, rest areas, agility field equipment, Farm’s trails, winding creek, pond along with endless acres of fields and meadows -- the perfect backdrop for hiking, swimming and wading, playing fetch, bird watching, relaxing, napping, and more. Even when the Getaway is fully booked, at maximum capacity it’s only 26 other dog-loving guests. With 175 acres to roam, you and your dog will feel as though you have the Farm all to your own to explore. You can feel great having an enjoyable vacation and doing something wonderful for dogs in need. Your stay at the Farm supports our rescue operation, Sweet Border Collie Rescue. Guests like to tour the rescue operation during their stay. Many enjoy meeting the rescue dogs personally. There are many activities to enjoy with your dog while vacationing at The Gateway. Trails lead you through distinctive features of the Farm suitable for human and canine alike: hiking, swimming and wading, agility, tracking, Frisbee, and more. Bring out the naturalist in you and have fun identifying wildflowers and birds or spotting deer, beaver, herons and foxes. The beauty of nature may compel you to sit back and relax and take in the surroundings. Strategically placed tables, benches and lounging chairs with umbrellas and hammocks are available to take a load off while your dog(s) cool off in the Creek.

Relax by the while your dog takes a swim.

Each trail leads you into a wilderness wonderland that has been well-traversed by dogs. In fact, the trails follow the routes the owner’s dogs showed them when the farm was created. The trails cross varied terrain depending on where you are on the property. Most are flat or rolling grassy footpaths through the meadows and creek side or cleared trails through the woods with exposed tree roots and some loose rocks. There are several rocky inclines; sturdy footwear is recommended.

The spring-fed pond and Bullfrog pond can be serene and relaxing for you, or wildly fun for canine water lovers. Dogs can wade in from the beach area or take a flying leap off the floating dock.

Trails throughout the farm through meadows and wooded areas.

Butternut Creek, renowned for its beauty, runs throughout the Farm offering endless chances for your dog to go for a swim, or simply just wade in to cool off. From the light reflecting babbling brooks to fast currents and hidden swimming holes, a surprise lay around every bend.

Agility equipment is available for use anytime during your stay. With complete courses of obstacles, you can practice any aspect of the sport you like and use each day to build greater skills or just have fun challenging both you and your dog. You can build the course to your dog’s skill level. A trainer is available to work with guests of the Farm on agility training at any level. In addition to agility instruction, the trainer can also help with training, and solving problem behaviors. The trainer uses only positive methods and is an outstanding clicker trainer. There is an additional fee for the training. When you come to the Getaway, bring your road bike or hybrid and experience the best in country road biking. While your dog takes a break from all the onsite activities, you can head out on your own adventure. Each trip includes a unique stopping location generally at mid-trip where you can take a rest break and have a quick lunch or snack or drink. The stops include a quaint country deli in Gilbertsville; a public golf course with restaurant in Laurens; a local brewery in Garrettsville; and the complete facilities of a 1600 acre park at Gilbert Lake State Park. If you would like to include an afternoon of golf during your vacation at Glen Highland Farm, there are two very interesting courses within 10 miles of the campground. A tee time can be arranged at either course, and rental clubs are available. Of course, your dog will have to stay behind, but your dog probably needs a break from running around the Farm all day! If you enjoy the outdoors, nature, and spending quality time with your dog and family The Getaway at Glen Highland Farm is the perfect destination for you this spring or summer.
